(Internet Service Provider) ISP is sometimes also referred to as IAP (Internet Access Provider). Here, a company provides other large companies and individuals access to the Internet, and other Internet related services, usually for a monthly fee. Various transmission technologies are used to connect customers to the Internet such as Dial up, DSL, Cable, Broadband and Wireless Fidelity(Wi-Fi). And these are the typical business-type connections DSL, SHDSL and Ethernet technologies. 

 

Here are a few ideas to keep in mind while selecting your ISP.

What are your needs?
What exactly are you planning to use the Internet for? Whether it is for sending and receiving e-mails, uploading photos, browsing various sites, working on the Internet or getting into full fledged social networking, decide what you need it for. This will aid in determining which ISP will suit you best.

Example:
For sending and receiving e-mails a regular dial-up will suffice, but a person who needs the Internet 24x7 for work purposes may require a different package.

Where do you live?
For those living in the city, opting for DSL, Wireless, Cable or Dial up won't be a problem, but for those living in the countryside or hard to reach places, a Satellite connection may be the only one available.

Speed and Bandwidth
Again, needs differ according to the user. A small to medium company will require maybe 3Mbps of speed while a bigger company will require a higher speed. They are categorized into download and upload speed, where the download speed is always higher. If you are using the Internet for just basic purposes, regular speed is enough. But if you plan to spend a lot of time putting up videos, downloading data, and working with lots of applications and software you will need a faster package.

Ask around
Ask about the various package deals used by your friends, neighbors and family. They will tell how the service and network is. Customer care is a big deal, you don't want to be stuck without proper help in dire times. As customer service differs from region to region, it is best if you get a local opinion on it. This way, you will know beforehand if the network has any limitations and narrow down your options.

Price
A Satellite Internet connection might be more expensive than a simple Dial up, but it will also be faster. Check how much you need to pay and which provider suits all your needs. Saving a few dollars, and being stuck with a slow connection is not a feasible option. Make sure you do your research before choosing a network, so that you don't regret your decision. Be sure to read exactly what is included in the package you sign up for.

Hardware
Not every ISP will work equally well with every system. If your business is a big one your hardware requirements will differ. Find out beforehand which will be best for your specific needs. Research and find out or simply call the network to know exactly what new hardware and software you'll need before you sign up with an ISP.
